More Than Just a Man

God foretold His plan of salvation to the world hundreds of years prior to Christ’s birth.  We know that Jesus’ very miraculous birth was announced by an angel, born of a virgin in a stable, proclaimed by a host of angels and worshipped by shepherds.  Later, He was brought precious gifts by wise men traveling from afar, guided by a star.  Nativity scenes and productions depict His birth in hopes of ministering to people all over the world.

But….what is Christmas exactly?  Is it more, God becoming man?  Christ’s birth is the fulfillment of God’s promise made long ago to Abraham, the promise of a descendent who will be a blessing to all the nations!

God’s vast unconditional love moved Him to bring spiritual deliverance to people.  Not just people of Mary and Joseph’s time, not just the Israelites; but, for all people, in all times.  All of us!  In order to do that, God had to journey the path of life as we do.  In our broken heartedness, God saves us through Christ.  We celebrate Christ’s birth, but Christmas is really about Easter, Christ’s death and resurrection.  Scriptures tell us Christ was silent throughout His trial and uttered only a few words on the cross.  When He did speak, two of those times, He sought forgiveness for a thief and those who put Him there.  He died for a fallen world lost in their sin and forgave them in their ignorance.  Christ’s silence signifies His level of obedience to the Father.  There is nothing “fair” about taking on the pain and suffering of anyone who deserves condemnation.  Yet Christ took it on for all of mankind, past, present and future.

Many people today feel to keep sight of God’s gift of Christ’s birth, they must choose. Many are torn between the holiday spirit and the holiday message.  There is no wrong in enjoying the season and if we keep our eyes opened to how God sees things, we will be amazed at how God takes ordinary things of this world and uses them to guide us to an understanding of who He is.  Perhaps Christ is calling us to celebrate Christmas in the nature of His birth, in humility and love, living for God throughout the year.  Christ desires us to live a life dominated by gratitude and love for the Father.  Gratitude for His birth, His obedience in death.  We express our love for Him directly and as an extension of grace towards one another.

Christmas is filled with so many visuals that can guide our remembrance to the true meaning of the season and its purpose.  I love seeing Christmas lights at night, but what I love most is what it reminds me of.  Jesus is the Light of the world and we can be a light in a spiritually dark world.  I also love candy canes which symbolize His sacrifice and our cleansing.  As the red dissolves, you are left with a white stick just as the hearts of those who know Him as Lord are from the shedding of His blood.  We put up Christmas trees decorated with all kinds of ornaments.  As you decorate your tree remember the same baby we gaze at in a nativity is the One who was nailed to a tree so we could be reconciled back to God.  Let us hold these Truths close to our hearts this Christmas.  Let us season our getting holding fast to God’s greatest gift of all, His only Son Jesus.

This morning my pastor ended his message sharing God’s peace is the only peace we need.  It is my prayer you find hope in a Savior given and live in a wondrous peace each day.  Whatever you may be facing this Christmas season, may the Prince of Peace remain strong in your hearts.

He is here!

PRAY, CONSIDER, RECEIVE, SHARE

Please PRAY for those who are truly alone this season, that the Lord bring others into their lives to ease the loneliness.  Pray for those who are homeless and on the streets as runaways.  Pray for those addicted and lost in the deceptions of this world.  Pray the convicting work of the Holy Spirit so they are able to find strength and courage in order to make their way to a Heavenly Father, the healing He has for them and homes that miss them.  Jesus promised to intercede when the devil comes to devour, deceive and destroy.  Join Him by praying without ceasing for the lost and the hurting.

Pray that the hearts of people turn towards Christ and be guided by the Holy Spirit.  The world has become more uncertain than ever.  Matthew 24:6 repeats the words of Christ that tells us in the end times we will hear talk of war and rumors of war.  He goes on to say that we are not to be troubled because these things must come to pass.  People go about their daily lives without assurance, searching for comfort in a world that cannot possibly provide it.  We live in a country where churches sit on every corner.  Lexington Park alone has nearly two dozen churches.  Bibles are sold openly and given freely.  We can pray in public establishments and speak the name of Jesus without fear of persecution.  Let us not take that for granted but use such liberty to live out the gospel to those around us.  Opportunity to know Christ and His word is everywhere.   Opportunity to grow deeper in faith is everywhere.

For those in Christ, our confidence comes from knowing God’s redemption plan restores us back to Him.  It is there we find ultimate peace in knowing Jesus brings salvation to all who will receive.   Jesus is the Way, the Truth and Life.  Only He can reconcile our hearts back to God.  Seek the Way.  Learn of Truth.  Choose Life.   Please PRAY that people develop a hunger and thirst to know more of Jesus.  Pray hearts open to hear the Good News of God's plan to reconcile all creation back to Him through His Son Jesus Christ.  Pray for spiritual growth with the people of America, that they embrace their faith in Jesus, fully trusting in Him.  Pray that those in Christ boldly live out their faith for others to see, a living witness to God’s grace and mercy.  May we all not just believe in Jesus, but believe Him.

Loving the Enemy

Forgiving, for Real

I recently received a text attachment from a close friend and sister in Christ entitled “Forgiving for Real” where Franciscan Anthony Zaccaria is quoted:

“We ought to pity and love our enemies rather than hate and detest them, for they heap up evils upon themselves but deserve well of us; they provoke God’s anger against themselves, but adorn us with the crown of eternal glory.  We ought to pray for them; we should not be overcome by evil.”

The beginning of Matthew Chapter 9 Jesus questions the evil in the heart of Pharisees and asks which is easier, "forgive sins or say rise and walk"?  Later in the same chapter, Jesus warns his disciples that He is sending them out as lambs among wolves.  This prompted me further in scripture, to the book of Mark, where friends lower a man through a roof.  So, they get a man on a stretcher, which is like dead weight, hoisting him up on a roof, proceed to dig a hole large enough to lower the man still in the stretcher, to the feet of Jesus.  I asked my friend, “What lengths do we go, how determined are we to bring people to the feet of Jesus?”  And, I’m just speaking about friends.  Never mind those we don’t know and do I dare go there?  What about those we do not care for, resent, maybe even hate?  Those who hurt and bully us?  What about our enemy?

Yesterday I left my work in a blind fury.  I seriously thought I was on the verge of snapping.  I sat in my car, praying for 10 minutes calming, before I turned out unto the road.  This was the second time since the beginning of the school year I felt hatred for another.  Hate, unless I’m talking about the devil….or liver, this word rarely exists in my vocabulary.  Early evening, I fell asleep listening to a series of Psalms.  Having confessed to God my own lack of godliness in regards to how I expressed myself, albeit in an empty classroom hours after the school day, I failed to give God glory.  I’d been pushed to the end of a very long suffering rope and did not seek security in the knot, my hope at the end, Jesus.  By 11:45 PM I knew I had to deal with this before the “day’s end”.  Opening my prayer journal to the next blank page I printed names of those I vowed to pray specifically for.  No. Intercede on their behalf.  None have a relationship with God, all have bullied me and for each one I’ve  only offered up half-hearted prayers.

Only Jesus has the authority to forgive sins, but He commands us to forgive sins against us.  I had to ask myself if I took forgiving people too lightly.  How often did I forgive from the heart, as a sacrifice surrendering my hurt and pain?  Is that why we find loving the enemy so impossible, because we struggle forgiving those who blatantly live apart from God’s will?  I once found satisfaction reading David’s Psalms that called down God’s wrath on his enemies, I too want justice and life to be fair.  I often need it to be.  There were times when David had that chance, with Saul, and he extended mercy.  We live in a different age than David, we live under grace and are to extend mercy as well and God wants to bless us when we serve Him in the selfless manner.

We will go to great lengths to pray for those we love, our friends, and things that tap into our humanity.  As believers in God we must resolve to submit to the Holy Spirit’s power to develop the same determination that allows us to go to great lengths to pray for our enemy.  Our enemy is deceived.  Our enemy is lost.  Our enemy is insecure and angry.  Our enemy is wanted and loved.  Our enemy could choose to be redeemed.  Our enemy has not learned those Truths, yet.  If we refuse to forgive, love and truly intercede without ceasing, they might miss the chance to know beyond what this world offers.  Jesus offered His sovereign life so our enemy could be reconciled, too.    I went to work this morning apprehensive.  Nothing there changed, but I knew I could change how I saw those I deem my enemy.  I know not to respond in kind, but I now know not to respond to fix, be understood or be right (especially if I am!).  The peace that overwhelmed me, I could not deny.  Each time we love our enemy, the devil loses his foothold.  Why are we hating and despising and resenting?  He’s already been defeated!  I am not convinced “turn the other cheek” meant let someone hurt you again.  I think Jesus meant do not react, but immediately forgive, do not respond in kind, respond better, with a godly love and compassion.

Matthew shares with us in chapter 5:44, “But I say to you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you…”  When Jesus says to love others, He means our enemy, not just those who are good to us.  Let us come in unity to see our enemy as God does, with compassion and pray for each one.  Let us join as one to pray for one another as we take God at His word, owning and embracing it literally into our hearts.  It isn’t easy but we can set aside our justified anger for a greater good in Christ.  We can glorify God in a magnificent manner each time we surrender our will to turn away from a worldly reaction and turn to Him in a godly response that honors Him, keeps us from sinning and brings our enemy closer to knowing our Lord and Savior.  Let us forgive for real in order to really love.

Please PRAY for those you struggle with.  Those who are mean to you, lie about you, and cause division among God’s people.  For the bully, bigot and racist, the wolf in lamb’s clothing.  Pray for your authority who directs you to compromise your spiritual integrity and faith.  For the micro-manager and coworker who creates conflict, spreading gossip and slander.  Pray for the one who doesn’t even know you but treats you with animosity.  Pray for those who hate you because you love God.  For those who promote sin and work against what is good and right.  For those who persecute those who stand for what is good and right.  Pray. Pray for them, the enemy.  Pray the find the Truth and believe.  Pray they find a friend in you.  Pray they see the Friend within you.  Pray for the day you call an enemy friend.

God's Temple

This Place
Recently I was sharing the lyrics to a worship song composed by worship leader Ron Kenoly of San Jose, CA entitled “This Place”.

The words go like this:

The temple was finished, King Solomon prayed
The people came to see was God pleased with this place
Fire fell from Heaven, the priest could not go in,
God's glory was more than they could stand

Lord, may Your glory fill this temple, here today as You did then
May Your presence be more than we can stand
Lord may Your glory fill this temple as we gather in Your name
May Your glory fill this place

This place, is more than brick and stone, this place, will become a home
This place, is for the brokenhearted everywhere, a place that they will find someone Who cares Lord, in this place, believers will agree, in this place, we'll stand in unity
In this place, as we gather around Your throne
Lord, come and make this place, make it Your home
Lord let Your glory fill this place

I was on my way home from an interview a few days ago.  Same position, same grade levels, different school.  While the interview was positive and pleasant, I left with a very unsettled spirit.  "This Place" just happened to be next on the track and as it played I decided to go home through the county’s rural area.  As I drove through the heavily wooded area, with uncontrollable tears streaming down my face, I sang the words to this song.  I felt the release of sorrow I’ve carried this year from injury, deaths, loss of relationship….I thought, these words are not about a building and not just about the body of Christ.  These words are about us, the temple for our souls, our hearts.  Extended, this song rings clear straight to the deeps of my soul, my being before Him:

This place, houses a broken heart in me, a place that I find someone Who cares,
Lord, in this place, I can see, in this place, I'll stand in victory
In this place, as I gather around Your throne
Lord, come and make this place, make it Your home
Lord, let Your glory fill this place

For so long I looked at Christ’s “taking on all” for us half-heartedly.  There are things in my life, things done to me, that kept me from coming fully under His healing because while I believe He died for me, I was not quite sure He experienced things I have survived.  I realized that “God made into flesh,” God here on earth as man, taking on all suffering meant those hours of mocking, beating and hanging on a cross in fact means He has taken on all sin, done and done against.  He has gone through every single experience every single person has and will go through.  If you can imagine all of mankind lined up as God, Who judges all, reads each infirmity, each sin, each wrongdoing and as each word is spat, the whip is raised and hammer lifts, Jesus blocks each blow with His own self.  He took every curse, every blame, every hit, for us.  For us, in a fallen hopeless state.

I've come to realize when Jesus hung on the cross He experienced the ultimate with us, the most defining factor that required such a sacrifice.  During that time of arrest, accusation and crucifixion, up to His resurrection, Jesus for the first time knew what all mankind was condemned to live in.  He now knew separation from God.  He cried out, “Father, why have You forsaken me?”  He, the Kings of kings and Lord of lords, the true Son of God, was at the depths of humanity, full of sin He did not own, without God.  I cannot fathom myself ever again thinking Jesus did not experience the disturbing abuse I endured as a child.  I cannot fathom myself believing ever again that it matters.  This human thought process will no longer keep me from fully embracing what the extent of His sacrifice for me.  Life in Christ dictates we process in the spirit, against His holy word.  Jesus came to a fallen world and offered up His sovereignty as the Son of God, a willing exchange, in those final moments, for a fallen human life.  We are lost without the grace and mercy of God, the One Who created all things, the One Who created us.  We are lost without a Savior to redeem us back to God.

The lyrics to this song remind us that in the days of Solomon God needed a dwelling place among His creation.  God wants to commune with us.  What can be more wonderful in knowing, even in a fallen state, God Almighty wants to be with His creation?  This song also reveals to us that in our age, we live in the fulfillment of God’s promise.  Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus, as head of the body of believers, resides in each one who opens his or heart to Him.

A friend and I just concluded a study in the book of Colossians.  I am still astonished at our discovery in chapter two, just after finishing a study in the book of Revelation, how the church of Laodicea is mentioned.  Paul had not visited these churches, he did not plant them; however, Paul had a heart for those new in Christ and desired to encourage them as they grew in understanding.  His hope was to see them established in their faith.  The soul of man thrives in the Truth of Jesus Christ.  It transcends beyond believing in a God, but believing God and carrying with it, a readiness to proclaim that Truth.  Paul wanted the early believers of Colossae to be rooted in their faith in Jesus Christ in order to recognize false witnesses and stand firm in the redemption of Jesus.  Paul understood believers cannot mature if not grounded and can be easily led astray by deceivers.  In later years, John wrote a letter to the church of Laodicea as God held believers to account for being “lukewarm”.  My friend and I paused to determine a timeline.  We approximate the church of Laodicea moved from a church growing in the knowledge of Christ to a lukewarm church in the same generation.  A span of perhaps thirty years?  Making it real for myself, that would be my coming to Christ at 24 and losing my zeal, my first love, by 54 years of age!

The words of this song should challenge individual hearts, as well.  Are we living our lives unto Him?  Seeking and yielding?  Do our hearts desire His will first and foremost?  Are we growing and becoming more like Him, conforming to His will, transforming to His character?  Is His glory more than we can stand?

Please PRAY for Christian America.  Pray that we humbly seek His will in our lives, that His will be the desire of our hearts, trusting Him in the direction He wants us to go.  Pray we remain true to the message of Jesus Christ, boldly being an extension of who He is and sharing the gospel of salvation to others in our midst.  Pray that we stand firm in whatever the Lord requires of us, in obedience, rejoicing, full of thankfulness in all things that come about.  Pray that our strength not give out and our staying power not falter.  Pray for comfort and healing for those who have lost loved ones, are sitting in prison, or are battling illnesses.  Let us be a light to those in need.  Let us not lose hope and retain the joy of our salvation, that faith be strengthened.  Jesus promised to intercede when the devil comes to devour, deceive and destroy.  Join Him by praying without ceasing sharing the gospel of Christ at all costs.  Let our choice to follow Jesus, unto death, be a reminder to us to stop “practicing religion” and live out a faith in Jesus, for His namesake, to God’s glory.

For those mature in Christ, our confidence comes from knowing God’s redemption plan which restores us back to Him.  It is there we find ultimate peace in knowing Jesus brings salvation to all who will receive.   Jesus is the Way, the Truth and Life.  Only He can reconcile our hearts back to God.  Let us not grow comfortable in this Truth we saturate ourselves in.

Gratefulness

Great is My Gratefulness

There are not many times, if any, where I can recall failing to thank God for something He has brought about in my life.  A provision, direction, or simple things like the splendor in a western sunset or brilliance of an eastern sunrise.  I thank Him when  He presses in my mind the object I’m looking for! I’ve thanked Him, on the grayest of days, for the vibrant purple blossoms set against the dismal sky.  I thank Him for people, for my home, my car, and when I can find no joy in my workplace I thank Him I am employed.  When in the midst of trials and sufferings, I think I am managing well because I can find something to thank Him for.  I tell myself I am being positive and optimistic.  Godly.  All these things are good, but today I found a Truth in thanking Him.

Grateful derives from the Latin word “gratus” which means pleasing.  I define gratefulness “as an appreciation that indicates a disposition to express gratitude by giving thanks, as to a merciful Providence, often with a sense of deliverance”.  I have been playing a worship song on a wooden wind instrument and piano for decades.  Many of you know this song by Don Moen:

Give thanks, with a grateful heart.  Give thanks, to the Holy One…..

A grateful heart, a pleasing heart towards God for what He’s done goes further than the circumstances in our lives, deeper than our problems and struggles.  Thanking God with a pleasing heart towards Him extends to Him an honoring sense of worship for His plan of reconciling this fallen world back to Him through His Son Jesus Christ.

This afternoon, I casually opened a letter from PNC Bank knowing what it was, my yearly escrow notice.  I don’t understand the whole escrow business.  All I know is that each year the escrow collected is never enough and when I pay the shortage amount due, my new mortgage is still a few dollars more than the previous year.  This is what banks refer to as a “fixed” mortgage.  This year as I unfolded the papers to see how much I’d be paying I found a check attached to the letter.  I read the form and stared at the letter dumfounded and confused.

In those moments I uttered my thanks to the Lord, the One who always provides, Who always makes a way, the One Who blesses.  In those next moments something washed over me.  A humbleness.  A humbleness of gratefulness before my Lord.  I thought how insignificant my needs are against the awesome wonder of how He loves us, how He cares for us.  I began to see gratefulness, the noun, as a verb in an act of worship.  When we thank Him, do we worship Him as well?  Too many times, I think, I take thanking Him lightly.  I’ve grown accustomed to thanking Him for all I have, as genuine as it is, it isn’t the same as worshipping Him with a grateful heart for what He's done.  Thanking Him as He moves in our lives should lead us to what He’s done to provide life eternally.  The two should never be separated.  One, thanks, should lead us into to the other, gratefulness.  Let our hearts worship Him in an attitude of our gratefulness for how He works in our lives, but never allowing it to take precedence over what He has done to redeem our lives.

As in the definition I take liberty in paraphrasing, it is the “sense of deliverance” that washed over me.  I pray I not lose that awareness of my need for deliverance, my gratitude for receiving it through Jesus Christ.  I never want to lose sight of what I felt today when my gratefulness took me to my knees regarding the magnificent plan of salvation God has fulfilled in Jesus’ death and resurrection redeeming us from a sinful state of being.  I could use the unexpected money today, but I need Jesus every day.  All the money in the world will never help me.  It can only ease the burden, for now, but will never save me. In all things concerning our lives, let us give thanks, with grateful hearts of worship for Who Jesus is and what God’s done for us through Christ.  Let our gratefulness continually remind us of a merciful deliverance gifted to us by God, through the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ.
